WHAT’S BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art focused on technique, leverage, timing, and control rather than relying on strength or athleticism alone.
Students learn how to control and neutralize a resisting opponent through positional control, takedowns, escapes, and submission techniques in a safe and structured training environment.
At its core, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches students how to remain calm under pressure while developing confidence, discipline, problem solving, and body awareness both on and off the mats.
Technique Over Strength
One of the foundational principles of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the idea that proper technique and positioning can overcome greater size, strength, and aggression.
Students develop an understanding of:
leverage and timing
movement and body mechanics
balance and positioning
technical control
problem solving under pressure
This makes Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu an effective martial art for people of all ages, body types, and experience levels.
Physical & Mental Benefits
Training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is both physically and mentally challenging.
Students often experience improvements in:
confidence
discipline
coordination and mobility
physical fitness
mental resilience
self-awareness
focus and stress relief
Just as important, BJJ provides the opportunity to become part of a strong and supportive training community built around mutual respect and continuous growth.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & MMA
Many people first discover Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu through mixed martial arts (MMA), where BJJ plays a major role in grappling and ground fighting.
While Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has deep roots in self-defense and combat sports, regular training at VA Academy is focused on safe, technical grappling instruction in a controlled and welcoming environment.
Classes do not involve striking, punching, or kicking.
The goal is to create an environment where students can train consistently, safely, and effectively for the long term.
What To Expect In Class
